This full Moon is the second to bless August, satisfying the criterion of a Blue Moon based on the current categorization published by Sky & Telescope magazine in 1946.
The more conventional definition of a Blue Moon, which dates back to at least the 1500s, refers to the third full Moon in a season of four Moons.
From New York City, the Super Blue Moon will rise in the eastern horizon shortly after dusk on Wednesday.
If adverse weather circumstances prevent you from seeing the moon, there is an option. The Virtual Telescope Project, led by astronomer Gianluca Masi of Rome, Italy, will broadcast a free livestream of the event beginning at 23:30 ET on August 30.
This livestream is available on Space.com, courtesy of the project, or via the project's YouTube page.
